Hike the Virungas

Mountain Hiking in Rwanda

Conquer the majestic volcanoes of the Virunga Massif — from crater lakes to the highest peak in the range.

Discover the Majestic Virunga Volcanoes

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is not only home to the world-famous mountain gorillas but also offers some of the most spectacular hiking experiences in East Africa. The park protects five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Massif: Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo. Each volcano offers a unique hiking experience, ranging from relatively gentle climbs to challenging multi-hour ascents that reward you with breathtaking panoramic views.

Volcano hiking in Rwanda has grown significantly in popularity as travelers seek to extend their gorilla trekking adventure with additional outdoor activities. The trails wind through bamboo forests, giant lobelia fields, and alpine meadows, offering extraordinary biodiversity and birdlife along the way. For many visitors, standing atop a Virunga volcano and gazing across the misty landscape is just as memorable as the gorilla encounter itself.

Mount Bisoke: The Crater Lake Volcano

Mount Bisoke stands at 3,711 meters and is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Volcanoes National Park. The hike typically takes 4 to 6 hours round trip and is considered moderately challenging. The trail begins at an elevation of approximately 2,700 meters and climbs steadily through dense bamboo forest before opening up into sub-alpine vegetation. The highlight of the Bisoke hike is the stunning crater lake at the summit ? a deep, emerald-green lake nestled within the volcanic cone that often has mist swirling across its surface.

Mount Karisimbi: The Highest Peak

Mount Karisimbi is the highest of the Virunga volcanoes at 4,507 meters, making it the sixth-highest mountain in Africa. The hike requires two days to complete, with an overnight camping stay at approximately 3,800 meters. This is a challenging trek that demands a good level of fitness and proper preparation. The trail passes through multiple vegetation zones ? from bamboo forest and Hagenia woodland to giant heather and Afro-alpine grassland.

Mount Muhabura: The Guide

Mount Muhabura reaches 4,127 meters and is the third-highest Virunga volcano. The name Muhabura means “the guide” in the local Kinyarwanda language. The hike is strenuous and typically takes 6 to 8 hours round trip. The steep trail ascends through multiple ecological zones, and the final push to the summit involves scrambling over volcanic rock.

Mount Sabyinyo: The Old Man’s Teeth

Mount Sabyinyo, meaning “old man’s teeth” due to its jagged summit ridge, is the oldest of the Virunga volcanoes at 3,669 meters. It straddles the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, making it possible to stand in three countries at once at the summit.

What to Pack for Volcano Hiking

Proper preparation is essential. Bring sturdy waterproof hiking boots, moisture-wicking layers, a waterproof rain jacket, at least two liters of water, high-energy snacks, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent, gardening gloves, gaiters, a small first-aid kit, and a headlamp. Hire a porter at the trailhead ? you will support the local community and make your hike much more comfortable.

Best Time for Volcano Hiking

The best time is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. Trails are firmer, visibility is better, and rain is less likely. Hiking is possible year-round, and the rainy seasons offer fewer crowds and lush landscapes.
