Nestled in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes, the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo are two of Rwanda’s most beautiful and under-visited natural attractions. Located a 30-minute drive from Musanze town, these lakes offer stunning scenery, excellent birdwatching, and authentic cultural experiences at 1,860 meters above sea level.
Covering approximately 55 square kilometers with depths up to 80 meters, Lake Burera is surrounded by steep terraced hillsides where farmers cultivate potatoes, beans, and maize. The lake is known for dramatic early morning scenery when mist rises from the surface and the Virunga volcanoes emerge in the distance. Small islands dot the lake, some inhabited by fishing communities.
Smaller and shallower, Lake Ruhondo offers spectacular emerald-green waters with the Virunga volcanoes as a dramatic backdrop. The lake is popular with photographers during sunrise and sunset. Boat trips offer close-up views of fishermen casting nets and abundant birdlife.
Traditional wooden canoes and motorized boats are available for hire. A typical trip lasts 1 to 3 hours and can include island visits, fishing demonstrations, or simply relaxing on the water.
Over 200 bird species have been recorded including the African fish eagle, malachite kingfisher, grey crowned crane, and great cormorant. The marshes and papyrus swamps at the lake edges are particularly rich in birdlife.
Guided community walks take you through villages, farms, and fishing settlements. Learn about banana beer brewing, basket weaving, or walk through terraced hillsides chatting with farmers. Revenue directly supports local schools, healthcare, and clean water initiatives.

Lake Burera is the larger of the twin lakes, sitting at an elevation of 1,862 metres. Its calm, deep-blue waters reflect the surrounding terraced hillsides and the distant silhouette of the Virunga volcanoes. Small fishing canoes dot the shoreline, and the lake is a vital source of fish and water for local communities.
Lake Ruhondo lies just south of Burera, connected by a narrow channel. Slightly smaller but equally stunning, Ruhondo is framed by steep, forested slopes and offers a more intimate, tranquil atmosphere. Birdwatchers will find an abundance of waterfowl and migratory species along its shores. Together, the lakes form a breathtaking highland landscape.
Explore the lakes by traditional wooden canoe or motorboat. Guided tours take you to hidden coves, islands, and fishing villages along the shoreline.
Over 200 bird species have been recorded around the twin lakes, including kingfishers, herons, fish eagles, and the striking giant kingfisher.
